1. Think karma
Networking professionally means just as much offering your own skills and contacts as receiving help yourself. Even if you do not get back the service, you will benefit from people talking good about you.
2. Listen more than talk
Make sure it’s not you who talks the most. People want to be seen and love to be listened to. Encourage and show that you are interested. It will be appreciated by the person you are talking to.
3. Pair people together
Buzz on your own network and pair people together. It will strengthen the image of you as a person with a strong network.
4. Be open with what you need
Don’t be too shy to ask for help. Your network is not a mind reader. Talk to your friends colleagues and other people in your network about your goals. Suddenly you meet someone who knows someone who can help you get there.
5. Lunch with other departments
Aim to have lunch with a new person every week. Preferably from another department. Then you will be able to familiarize yourself with the challenges of the organization which is good for your career internally. Also, you never know where your colleagues will start working next.
